Rpi3B NAS HELP!

November 30, 2023, 10:44

oops.se

It depends on how advanced NAS you want. Just installing Raspberry Pi OS and add Samba so you can share files with Windows/Linux/Mac computers is quite trivial, 10-30 minutes work. See https://www.raspberrypi.com/tutorials/nas-box-raspberry-pi-tutorial/ If you wish a more advanced NAS you can pick a NAS distribution and then you get Web management and more features integrated in one place, the Web interface.

blazingbackup

Could you do a NAS/Media player?

blazingbackup

i wanna figure out how to take all my DVDs and put them on the nas to stream to other devices

blazingbackup

i havnt ripped a dvd in YEARS idk if handbrake is even around anymore

oops.se

Handbrake is there, Opensource is hard to kill 🙂

blazingbackup

you think that would be best option for ripping?

oops.se

I would use MKV

blazingbackup

ill have to look it up never heard of that one

oops.se

But HandBrake is god

blazingbackup

so

blazingbackup

if i store the movies on the nas

blazingbackup

and i wanna watch them on a computer can it stream the video or would i have to download it then watch?

oops.se

You can either stream, or use the NAS as a harddrive over the network (NAS = Network Attached Storage)

oops.se

Check out the distro "OpenMediaVault"

oops.se

That is a NAS distro that can be installed on Raspberry Pi hardware

blazingbackup

ok and i can either stream the videos frim that or just download them

blazingbackup

it seems like this is just what i need

oops.se

Have a look at that distro and the plugins that is available

blazingbackup

ooo plugins you say!?

oops.se

and I think you will find what you need

oops.se

Most NAS have a plugin system for extra features like "Photo album", streaming, web servers +++

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

i dont think i need any of these

blazingbackup

maybe file browser

blazingbackup

i mean tbh idk what alot of those plugins do anyway lol

oops.se

Ok my memory isn't perfekt, I thought they had a RIP plugin

blazingbackup

ill just rip on my PC and send it over

blazingbackup

RIpping on the pi would take awhile prob

blazingbackup

and you dont think i could get away with using a pi0?

blazingbackup

pi0w

oops.se

OMV say minimum RPi2B

blazingbackup

i can use my 3b... im just trying to find a home for my pi0w...

oops.se

And ripping on a Pi would take time, but Im used to just put a DVD/CD into the tray and then do other stuff

blazingbackup

any ideas what i could do with a pi-w?

blazingbackup

i cant use it for octoprint with any or my printers.

blazingbackup

not good enough for retropi

oops.se

I have a Zero as backup for IoT (Mosquito server) and I just bought a Zero 2 for lab before I deploy something on my Pi 4

oops.se

The Pi 4 is my main IoT server and I will deploy a media server soon and a MagicMirror2

blazingbackup

oh well, he will be homeless for now.

blazingbackup

someday ill find something for him to do

blazingbackup

i saw in the raspberrypi imager theres a section for smart home?

blazingbackup

or its Home assistant and home automation

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

these

blazingbackup

What can i do with these?

null

Control things, like lamps from Ikea, or smart home things from Shelly, or Homematic. Suggestion for your pi0: Measure temperature with the DS18B20.

blazingbackup

you wanna turn my pi into a thermometer...

blazingbackup

OH! i know

blazingbackup

could it control a small stepper motor and do RGB lights?

blazingbackup

so im making this clock

blazingbackup

not with the table tho, instead of buying an Arduino the pi 0 will work for that right?

null

Error message?

blazingbackup

blazingbackup

i think i got it now, but it rebooted and reset the network settings i think
