Help Article I wrote for Noobs

I wrote an article for the Noobs starting with the Raspberry Pi 5 because I felt like when I first started, there was like zero documentation for certain apps not working. So if I can solve them I can provide the solutions in an article for noobs while also adding personality unlike most help articles and also explaining stuff to the reader so they understand why certain things are done. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZVjokHRHGz0HpAggySH4Y4LdddpFmQfnIv0Yo1UvjlM/edit

What I want is feedback for my article to improve it and also clarify certain things more.

General staring comments: 1. Crop pictures! Many pictures is showing information that is unneeded. Example picture of Raspberry Pi Download page. 2. You have taken screenshots with a display in high resolution = A lot of dead space and text becomes unreadable. 3. If you are writing a computer focused guide use correct language, example ~~HDMI Television~~ HDMI Display.

The information inside the red square is of interest, the rest not so much

oops.se

You have used a to high screen resolution, the text is unreadable, and what value has the taskbar?

oops.se

And be careful to be to explicit, "Official 27 watt PSU", I would have wrote a 5Volt 5 A power supply with Power Deliver 3.1 support or later, example "Official 27 watt PSU"

oops.se

And where is the TOC ?

hammeraster

Thank you I will change this

oops.se

My opinion, a picture can be smaller, it should complement the text. With big pictures it just make the document into a "A lot of scrolling"

hammeraster

Okay I agree I definitely over did it with the images

oops.se

And I see that you use Windows. When taking print screens, press "Alt" button and then press "PrtScr" . This will take a screen shoot of "Active window" so you don't have to crop the pictures later

hammeraster

Got it!

oops.se

And I would never recommend this wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Botspot/pi-apps/master/install | bash and I also think you missed the sudo. And why I would never recommend it, that install script can contain whatever malicious commands so I always recommend to: 1. Download 2. Read it 3. Excetute it

hammeraster

It’s on the official Pi-apps page

hammeraster

I’ll cite my sources there

oops.se

Ohhh now I read about overclocking and without any explaining about the consequences. If I was reading this I would have stop reading now as I wouldn't trust the article/document.

hammeraster

Oh my gosh

hammeraster

I will be changing that promptly

hammeraster

I’m going to bold it so the reader know to read the part explaining the negatives of overclocking.

hammeraster

I will also be adding this to the swap size section

hammeraster

Okay I have added these warnings

hammeraster

I’m honestly glad you caught that

hammeraster

I put it in bold and included the same font and size used on the title for READ ME so the reader knows it’s important

hammeraster

Then I explain why and how it’s bad for a raspberry pi

hammeraster

And that if they wish to continue they can do so but with caution

hammeraster

I won’t be including warnings for any of the programs because applications can be user altered. That and they don’t incur major changes that could affect the pi

hammeraster

The plan is for now that I’m going to private it until further notice so that I can further revise my article

btw you must know oops.se is a very harsh and good critique, I like it about him but I just need to stress he is trying to help with it. a lot of people won't realise that

hammeraster

Oh I know

hammeraster

I just don’t think it’s still good to be public just yet

hammeraster

That and, I don’t want to be responsible for someone losing their Pi and I won’t have enough time the next couple of days to address the issues

hammeraster

I have a teacher who teaches just like that, and unless you know him his behavior would 100% seem rude, but if you know him you know that he’s funny and he’s just trying to get us to stay focused

oops.se

I had a pupil one and he was confused, he had always got positive responses to his achievements, but he said to me "On day you say I do shit and the other day I was good. I'm so confused." , So I sat down and said "Look at this result is it good ?" and I got a "Naaaa, not really". So I told the pupil, when I say it is good, it is, but I will also say the opposite and that's because it is! To try to strengthen people by only giving positive encouragement is going to destroy a persons self image when they realise that they have been lied for. So that is my motto, tell the truth and try to encourage to change behaviours and ways improve yourself.

oops.se

But how can I access it and advice you if you go private? Put a disclaimer on the first page that this is not to be used if you don't know the consequenses.

oops.se

I invest my time in your document because I think that it's needed. But I would divide the document into a "Beginner" and "Next step for a beginner" and put for example over clocking in the second document.

hammeraster

I actually agree with this, purely positive feedback contributes to a heightened self image akin to glorifying if you’ve been told you are correct and you’re doing it right you’re whole life because realistically no one’s perfect.

hammeraster

In google you can provide people with viewing rights by typing their email at the top of the share screen

hammeraster

I won’t be able to reply too much as I’m trying to compile an old game right now
