Pretty new to this. My brother bought my me a pi-4 b. I'm running it on Ubuntu desktop. I'm setting up a pi-hole (trying at least). I thought I did everything right. The laptop I'm on now passes the pi-hole test but other devices (including the pi) do not. What information do I need to give you guys in order to get some help?
k9t33n
have you set it as your default DNS in your network?
gooddillhunting
I thought I did
gooddillhunting
I went to the modem's webpage and saw the primary dns and changed it to the pi-hole one
gooddillhunting
then reset the modem
k9t33n
I'm assuming your laptop passes the pihole test through other means like a built in adblocker for your browser
k9t33n
does your pi have a static IP address?
gooddillhunting
That's what I was thinking as well but I've since disabled ad blockers and it still passes
gooddillhunting
How do I check if my pi has a static IP?
k9t33n
it won't if you didn't set it
gooddillhunting
if you would be so kind can you tell me how
k9t33n
are you ok for it to run on pi os so I can rule out all issues with pihole because pihole was designed for pi os
gooddillhunting
so would that mean me getting rid of Ubuntu?
k9t33n
I don't really run Ubuntu as well so it's more of what I know
gooddillhunting
honestly, with this pi, I just want to create a super duper secure network for my house, VPN, Ad Block, spoofing maybe
k9t33n
correct, along with all the files and progress so far but I'm sure we can make progress quickly anyway
gooddillhunting
^ would that be a good OS for my needs?
gooddillhunting
I don't mind getting rid of ubuntu
k9t33n
perfect for your needs, it's purposefullly built for raspberry pis
k9t33n
did your brother flash it for you?
gooddillhunting
I flashed it with..umm what was the software called...like the most popular one
k9t33n
imager?
k9t33n
etcher?
gooddillhunting
etcher!
gooddillhunting
I'll just do that again
k9t33n
no we should probably use the imager now
k9t33n
the pi imager
gooddillhunting
should I say goodbye to Ubuntu in the terminal? I feel like we've built a bond and I don't want to be rude
k9t33n
which allows you to set your own settings ahead of time unlike etcher
Okay, question: after <ip a> I get A LOT of info. Should I be focusing on eth0 or wlan0? eth0 says DOWN and wlan0 says up
gooddillhunting
and the lnet for the first thing has an IP
gooddillhunting
I am hooked in via ethernet and built in wifi
gooddillhunting
oh shoot, I unplugged the eth, maybe that's why
gooddillhunting
okay they are both up
k9t33n
I don't understand to you still need me to answer a question or not?
gooddillhunting
so I see a few IP addresses
k9t33n
hmm
gooddillhunting
127.0.0.1
gooddillhunting
and
gooddillhunting
192.158.86.46/24
k9t33n
that's probably your routers ip
k9t33n
check your routers config to see which one your pi has currently
gooddillhunting
and 192.168.86.255
k9t33n
thats probably your router actually
k9t33n
this is your pis I'm assuming
gooddillhunting
Wired connection 1 fd82b5a5-ec72-3842-8462-519e8e2fe019 ethernet eth0
lo 64c8079d-062d-4a6d-8811-dc32de0b33a5 loopback lo
preconfigured 84dbdedd-dd97-4e4e-a5be-f9ef620a3ab0 wifi wlan0
gooddillhunting
woah sorry
gooddillhunting
I'm trying to print screen and send it to you
gooddillhunting
So after doing sudo nmcli con show I have 3 different UUIDs
gooddillhunting
ethernet, loopback, and wifi
gooddillhunting
am I to replace all of them individually?
k9t33n
I usually do the first one/the one you want to use
k9t33n
so ethernet maybe the best option for you
gooddillhunting
So I want my whole house and everyone using it (almost 100% wifi) to be covered
gooddillhunting
however my brother's machine is ethernet, is it possible to do both?
k9t33n
yes
k9t33n
just yes ethernet on your pi for more performance
gooddillhunting
Okay! I'll work on that. BTW you are an awesome person for offering your time like this to help people!
k9t33n
it's absolutely no problem
gooddillhunting
where do I find static IP?
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
I'm at this part
gooddillhunting
I actually may need help finding all of the fill in the blank parts
k9t33n
oh yes
k9t33n
ok go into your routers config and look for the IP range
k9t33n
or the IP scoop
gooddillhunting
eeep, sorry for asking so much but how do I do that?
gooddillhunting
like the router website?
k9t33n
yes
k9t33n
I can't really give instructions because every router config is widely and extremely annoyingly different
gooddillhunting
I know I shouldn't give this info out freely but you seem like a good dude
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
am I close?
gooddillhunting
k9t33n
your probably about fine
k9t33n
go to DHCP settings
gooddillhunting
k9t33n
ok the scoop is 2-254 which is too large
k9t33n
go into the connected devices for me and see if any of the devices end in a number above 200
k9t33n
so 192.168.0.201 is over for example
gooddillhunting
Where do I find connected devices <:confusedblob:1053364681575776276>
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
this?
k9t33n
yes
gooddillhunting
okay cool, there is also this
k9t33n
look through them and make sure nothings above or equal to 200 so when I knock it down a peg nothings broken
gooddillhunting
okay so it doesn't seem like anything on that first image is above or equal to 200
gooddillhunting
nor the second one
k9t33n
good
k9t33n
now go back to DHCP settings
k9t33n
and set the ending IP address to 192.168.0.200
gooddillhunting
okay set
k9t33n
great now you static it could be anywhere between 200 and 254
gooddillhunting
is there a way for me to check?
k9t33n
pick one you can remember
k9t33n
no it's not like that, you can choose what you want it to be now
gooddillhunting
oh okay, I'll google a template for what it should look like
k9t33n
no you don't need to either
gooddillhunting
oh okay
k9t33n
it's as simple as pick a number between 200-254, you want me to pick one for you?
gooddillhunting
that would be awesome of you
gooddillhunting
I'm very new to this stuff
k9t33n
201 then...
k9t33n
so your full static IP address will be 192.168.0.201
k9t33n
now do ip a again for me in the pi and show me
gooddillhunting
okay so first I have to enter the static IP into the con mod right?
k9t33n
con mod?
gooddillhunting
k9t33n
oh yes, can you show the output of ip a tho?
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
did I do that correctly?
gooddillhunting
oh no shoot I forgot the subnet mask
k9t33n
I mean I prefer if you'd copy and paste but it's fine
k9t33n
subnet mask here is /24
gooddillhunting
roger, adjusting now
gooddillhunting
fixed
k9t33n
ok and to get the routers config you entered the IP in a browser correct?
gooddillhunting
yes
gooddillhunting
it took me to my modem's homepage thing
k9t33n
ok and what is that ip?
gooddillhunting
192.168.0.1
k9t33n
thought so
k9t33n
ok put that for the gateway and DNS in the commands
k9t33n
and throughout all of it you know the UUID
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
done right?
k9t33n
do a reboot now sudo reboot now
gooddillhunting
roger
gooddillhunting
okay, rebooted
k9t33n
nice now hostname -I
k9t33n
and show it, it should say 192.168.0.201
gooddillhunting
k9t33n
thought it'd do that 😓
gooddillhunting
darn
k9t33n
now ip a
k9t33n
no it's not necessarily too bad I don't think we just need to disconnect wlan
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
So I have wi-fi AND an ethernet cord going into my Pi
k9t33n
yes
k9t33n
hmm interesting why is it 1 now??
gooddillhunting
for inet6?
k9t33n
for eth0
gooddillhunting
oh
gooddillhunting
is it possible I made a typo? Since the reboot I can't see what I put in
k9t33n
yes it is
gooddillhunting
so the screen shots I've sent are the things I've put in
k9t33n
possible and scary, it's probably done something with whatever device that has that ip
gooddillhunting
uh-oh, scary? Did I mess something up?
k9t33n
check them, one sec I gotta do something with my 3d printer
k9t33n
no your fine if you correct it quickly
gooddillhunting
how??
gooddillhunting
now I'm scared!
k9t33n
just do it all again correctly with no typos and reread everything I said
k9t33n
one sec
gooddillhunting
ok
gooddillhunting
okay wait a second, was I supposed to adjust the static IP in my browsers router settings?
gooddillhunting
maybe that was the problem?
k9t33n
no
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
okay redid it
gooddillhunting
Look good? Should I reboot?
gooddillhunting
also, curious as to why the UUIDs are listed in a different order this time
k9t33n
hmm thinking one second
k9t33n
I'm not sure how to disconnect the wlan
gooddillhunting
yeah cause I rebooted and -I and it was the same result
k9t33n
thought so
gooddillhunting
oh wait!
k9t33n
go on your computer and type ping 192.168.0.201
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
is this what we were after?
k9t33n
oh nice
gooddillhunting
yay!
gooddillhunting
I wonder where I mixed up the first round
gooddillhunting
I see it actually
gooddillhunting
the first time when I had to use quotes there was a space between the first quote and the start of the thing
k9t33n
ok now you can go ahead with pihole
k9t33n
oh I see
gooddillhunting
Okay! So! having done all this I completely forgot how to start the pihole process - I could use ChatGPT so you can help other people. You seem like a busy person
k9t33n
no it's fine
gooddillhunting
you're a rockstar
k9t33n
gooddillhunting
also, when we've accomplished this mission I'd like to keep the thread up to help other people but is there sensitive information I don't want people to know?
wow syntax is everything, I didn't capitalize the L in -sSL
gooddillhunting
so when it says choose an interface I want both eth0 and wlan0 right?
gooddillhunting
or wait. Just eth0 for now right? and then repeat the process for wlan0 I'm guessing?
gooddillhunting
and which upstream DNS provider should I use?
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
I want to basically be invisible online
gooddillhunting
but I also want to be incredibly secure
gooddillhunting
Quad9 is looking like a good choice
gooddillhunting
but I'm confused about the variations
gooddillhunting
I'm seeing a lot online about "unbound" how do I do that?
k9t33n
no just eth0 forever
k9t33n
I recommend cloudflare
k9t33n
same
k9t33n
sorry I responded late I was adjusting my 3d printer bed
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
annonymous?
k9t33n
that's just logging for you
k9t33n
I usually keep that on everything because no one but you sees that
jannik44
i would go with show everything, helps to indentify problems and refine results
gooddillhunting
coolio. So do you work in cybersecurity?
k9t33n
noop
k9t33n
to be honest with you I'm a 14 year old who just likes Linux and pis lol
gooddillhunting
Just a fellow privacy nut?
gooddillhunting
holy shit you're 14
k9t33n
yup
gooddillhunting
dude, you have a helluva future ahead of you
k9t33n
thank you!
gooddillhunting
when I was your age I was smoking weed and skateboarding - not learning much at all
gooddillhunting
so what is "unbound" and how do I get it?
k9t33n
ha ha, well I just like learning. most call me a nerd but I like it
k9t33n
where do you get that?
gooddillhunting
So when I googled which upstream DNS a bunch of people on reddit said "unbound"
k9t33n
ohh forget it
gooddillhunting
gotcha
k9t33n
i don't know what they sayin myself, probs a joke
k9t33n
ok set everything up?
k9t33n
now you just need to do it in your router now? put in your new 192.168.0.201 ip
gooddillhunting
I don't know what you want to do career wise but I was in the Army back in 07-13. It was a good time but I didn't like the job I got. They do have cybersecurity jobs though and if this is something you really like, you could make bank after doing one contract with the army
gooddillhunting
you'd have a security clearance
gooddillhunting
it would put you lightyears ahead of your competition
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
(they prob have CS in every branch, not just Army. Air Force is way more chill)
k9t33n
I'm not too much into cyber security. I'd like more managing of servers
gooddillhunting
ahh gotcha
k9t33n
and a backend developer
k9t33n
but anyway, need anymore help?
gooddillhunting
You have your life more figured out than I do and I'm 34
gooddillhunting
yeah so how do I test that this worked? I just sudo rebooted
k9t33n
ha ha, yeah Ive been told I'm planning to far ahead
gooddillhunting
doesn't hurt to have a general idea of what you want to do but life throws lots of curveballs and you've also gotta make sure to enjoy your youth! When older people tell you time goes by faster the older you get I never believed them but it's true
gooddillhunting
seems like just yesterday I was your age
k9t33n
put the new IP in your router and do that [pihole test](https://fuzzthepiguy.tech/adtest/ ) on multiple devices to see if it's a recurring pattern
gooddillhunting
the new IP....the static one?
k9t33n
oh no don't get me wrong I understand this is probably the best time of my life
k9t33n
Correct
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
here?
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
or there
k9t33n
no I don't think so
k9t33n
find "DNS", "upstream DNS" etc
gooddillhunting
this bad boy?
gooddillhunting
switch to custom?
gooddillhunting
other options are "DynDNS" and "No-IP"
k9t33n
<@661583386992836619> can you help them I got to go right now
gooddillhunting
<@1071178789939331253> thank you again dude! You are incredibly bright and caring. You're going places my dude
k9t33n
thank you so much, I wish you luck with this
gooddillhunting
Have a great day!
jannik44
so, dyndns and noip are dynamic dns services, to update domain records, you are trying to set the dns server in your router to your ppihole right?
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
am I close?
gooddillhunting
yes
gooddillhunting
for option 3. should I keep that at dynamic and then switch optioin 4.?
gooddillhunting
or do static for option 3. as well
jannik44
search for an option called like "upstream dns" make sure your router supports that, some dont(in this case you would need to set it individually for each device)
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
something like this?
gooddillhunting
I'm having a hard time finding the word "upstream" anywhere
gooddillhunting
or this
jannik44
no, this is something else, search for your router model and make sure it has that feature and where
gooddillhunting
so this page I am on is for my modem, is that normal?
jannik44
depends
jannik44
check your router online
gooddillhunting
Okay I may lose you for a second because it is so inconveniencedly attached to the wall that I may have to unplug it
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
okay so I manually entered the IP and now I see it there at the bottom
gooddillhunting
however when I do the pi test on my phone I still see adds
gooddillhunting
OH SNAP
gooddillhunting
okay that middle option, option 2 has upstream and downstream
gooddillhunting
which one do I want?
gooddillhunting
when I try to do upstream it says the IP is invalid
gooddillhunting
it was a typo with the extra spaces at the end. I set manual IP, upstream, Priority HIGH
gooddillhunting
my phone is still getting ads though, restart the modem?
gooddillhunting
Centurylink C4000xg - I can't seem to find the right info, do you think you could help me?
gooddillhunting
I'm doing something wrong cause my phone is still getting ads
gooddillhunting
do I basically just do the same thing but for wlan0?
these work on my laptop running windows and the rasp pi but not on my phone. I put my phone in airplane mode so it's only using wifi
gooddillhunting
it isn't passing anything
gooddillhunting
this is from my laptop
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
that's from my phone
gooddillhunting
Shouldn't all of these IP's be the static one? 192.168.0.201
k9t33n
go into your wifi settings and it should say dns
gooddillhunting
on which machine?
gooddillhunting
gooddillhunting
this is from my laptop
gooddillhunting
from PI
riothedev
that actually made me laugh out loud
gooddillhunting
My sister's computer on the network failed the test
riothedev
i suggest deleting the router page pics as it shows ur ipv4, it can't do much harm but it could be used for a ddos or finding ur approximate location
gooddillhunting
roger, will do once this is straightened out
k9t33n
then unfortunately you haven't set it correctly or it's your routers fault, do you mind setting it in ever device?
gooddillhunting
what do you mean?
gooddillhunting
oh also I tried changing her name server to the static IP and it didn't change anything
mrpakoras
Too late 😈 (jk)
gooddillhunting
yeah so the only device that the pi-hole is working on is the actualy pi
gooddillhunting
I'm not sure what changes I need to make via my modem/router's page
gooddillhunting
if I keep knocking the house offline though people may kill me
riothedev
lmao
riothedev
once u make the rpi's ip static u set it as the dns in the router and then restart the router I'm pretty sure
riothedev
i don't know much about it though
riothedev
and i dont know at what point u are
gooddillhunting
I'm so confused
gooddillhunting
I have the new static IP that <@1071178789939331253> helped me make
gooddillhunting
PI-Hole was installed on my PI
gooddillhunting
I just don't know what network functions to change
gooddillhunting
or where to change them. I have my laptop running windows that I'm typing to you on, I can get to the router/modem from the browser there but I assume it would be the same on the pi?
riothedev
mhm thats 192.168.0.201 as i read right
gooddillhunting
yes
riothedev
on the router webpage there should be a dhcp tab
riothedev
where u can set the primary dns to that ip
gooddillhunting
riothedev
ah
riothedev
ok there click custom servers
gooddillhunting
clicked
gooddillhunting
change the primary?
riothedev
change the primary to that ip yes
riothedev
192.168.0.201
gooddillhunting
If I stop responding that means the internet went down and I am being murdered by my family
riothedev
LOL
riothedev
u're a funny dude
gooddillhunting
ha thanks
gooddillhunting
okay so I went to canyoublockit.com
gooddillhunting
failed the extreme test on my laptop
gooddillhunting
but the pi passes
riothedev
hm
riothedev
wait
riothedev
can u open cmd on ur laptop
riothedev
and write
riothedev
ipconfig/all
riothedev
i wanna see if its using the pi as the dns
gooddillhunting
it is not
gooddillhunting
id post a pic but that'll just be another thing to remove, nothing on the cmd looks like the static ip
gooddillhunting
my googling is leading me to believe century link just sucks and I have to get a better router
riothedev
i doubt its cuz of the router
riothedev
dont think that displays any sensitive info as its just internal ips
riothedev
if it does I'll tell u and u can delete it right away i just need to see it for a sec
k9t33n
that's not just because its not working that could be because the adlist isn't that good right now but ok
gooddillhunting
riothedev
ok nothing sensitive there
gooddillhunting
I'm confused though because it passes just fine on the pi
hmm have you'd tried plugging the pi into the modem again?
k9t33n
like I said if I'm correct that shouldn't work either now
k9t33n
which is to be expected and somewhat of a good thing
gooddillhunting
If I do that I will get internet again but it'll be back to square one
k9t33n
no we're back to square one with more information now
gooddillhunting
v true
gooddillhunting
I can plug it in, one sec
k9t33n
they'res a difference
k9t33n
actually no I'm planning to go a bit further back then square 1, maybe square 0
gooddillhunting
Killed my internet. On my phone rn
gooddillhunting
plugged in
k9t33n
to be expected.
k9t33n
but does the pi have internet?
gooddillhunting
okay back online
gooddillhunting
pi has internet
k9t33n
in the modem?
gooddillhunting
correct
k9t33n
dammit that means all that work you were just doing in the router wasn't actually doing anything at all 😂
k9t33n
I mean the work when plugged into the router
gooddillhunting
which makes no sense to me
gooddillhunting
Internet died again
gooddillhunting
and it's back
gooddillhunting
weird
gooddillhunting
I literally didn't do anything
k9t33n
hmm
riothedev
it wass
riothedev
we reset the connection in the end
riothedev
so now it's on auto
k9t33n
ohhhh ok
gooddillhunting
I wonder if it's a hardware issue
riothedev
lol
k9t33n
doubt it
riothedev
but it couldn't connect to the router no matter what
k9t33n
ok let's go back to the router and turn it off auto ig
k9t33n
actually no
k9t33n
got another idea
k9t33n
we delete all of that and because he's on desktop we can connect to the internet the built in way
k9t33n
whilst plugged into the router
gooddillhunting
so plug into the pi into the router but use the wi-fi connect?
k9t33n
yes, we just want to undo all that we've done so with with con mod and whatnot
gooddillhunting
okie doke going to plug it into the router
k9t33n
uh thats about where my knowledge stops lol
k9t33n
hmm we're probably fine..
k9t33n
then go into the display and in the corner it should show like two arrows maybe with a cross through one of them
k9t33n
in the right hand corner
gooddillhunting
the arrows are blinking
gooddillhunting
but the wi-fi is still on
k9t33n
blinking? Im assuming that means it's connecting
gooddillhunting
currently on the wired connection there is no static address for IPv4
gooddillhunting
we deleted it
k9t33n
idk it feels like ages ago since I've used desktop
k9t33n
correct that's good because it means @riothedev did whatever he did correctly
gooddillhunting
k9t33n
that means it's connected!
k9t33n
oh no nvm
gooddillhunting
through wifi
k9t33n
that's via WiFi..
k9t33n
at this point we're fine with that right?
k9t33n
that just means it's a bit slower
gooddillhunting
I'll do a speed test
k9t33n
sure
gooddillhunting
well the speed is the same since the wired connection to the modem was deleted
gooddillhunting
so I'd have to remake that in order for any sort of speed boost
gooddillhunting
I think
gooddillhunting
because right now the speed is the same plugged in or not
gooddillhunting
I may have to put a pin in this for a bit, my brain is starting to melt
k9t33n
ok that's fine
gooddillhunting
I just realized I've been at this for like 4 hours straight
k9t33n
just to check are you fine with the speeds your getting right now?
gooddillhunting
is it a huge deal that pictures of my ip and all that are up?
k9t33n
public ips can share your general location so if you don't want us to be able to see your neighborhood yes
gooddillhunting
yeah totally fine, I wasn't ever really worried about internet access. I have a laptop and a desktop, and the pie was using wifi. I just wanted to pi-hole my whole house in one fell swoop
gooddillhunting
I'm really not that interesting I promise you
gooddillhunting
nor are my neighbors
k9t33n
I must mention this thread is being saved to a database which is put on a website online so other people can solve similar problems etc
gooddillhunting
There isn't any information that could lead to my computers though right? like IPv4 stuff?
gooddillhunting
subnet, default route, DNS
k9t33n
no not ipv4 because that's local
gooddillhunting
what about ipv6
k9t33n
no your fine in that area
k9t33n
I think your also fine
gooddillhunting
and the stuff from my cell phone?
k9t33n
not unless I find out where you live, go to your house and access your wifi. but at that point your already too far gone
k9t33n
can you reply to it for me?
gooddillhunting
I'm a discord noob, how do I search in here? it's going to take forever to scroll
k9t33n
in the top right they'res a search bar right?
k9t33n
you can just tell me what it contains
gooddillhunting
it'll have my phone number in it, eep
gooddillhunting
it's a picture so can't search
gooddillhunting
found and deleted
k9t33n
ooh you don't want that out there
k9t33n
ok
k9t33n
