Specific Boot Failure from SSD on Raspberry Pi 5 with Radxa Penta SATA Hat – SDRAM Error

Hey everyone, I've been troubleshooting an issue with my Raspberry Pi 5 (8GB) using a Radxa Penta SATA Hat and four SSDs (one for boot, the rest for NAS storage). I'm trying to boot from the SSD, but I'm getting 8 flashes on the RPi, indicating an SDRAM error (firmware issue or SDRAM damage). I've set the boot order correctly using a micro SD card, and everything works fine that way. However, when I remove the micro SD card and try to boot from the SSD (with Raspberry Pi OS Lite already configured and SSH enabled), I hit this error. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks in advance for your help

Did you install the operating system on the SSD?

Yes

What did you set the boot order to?

bouvreuil_

Nvme first

Are all SSDs already installed? If so, remove the 3 empty ones and only install the ones with the operating system.

that's how I've been doing it since the beginning

Perhaps that is the problem. Maybe the HAT doesn't like it if there is only 1 SSD in it, then maybe connect all of them and try again. Otherwise, what does the HAT manual say about this?

Yeah, I get what you mean. I’ll try plugging in all the SSDs and see if that changes anything. But I found someone with the exact same issue here: https://forum.radxa.com/t/pi5-penta-hat-boot-from-sata-drive/21377 , and it looks like there’s no solution yet.

What about the power supply? Did you follow the instructions? https://docs.radxa.com/en/accessories/penta-sata-hat/penta-for-rpi5#power-supply-selection
